A few months ago I accepted a part-time position at The Delaware Art Museum (where the labyrinth I facilitate is located) in Wilmington, DE. The Delaware Art Museum (DAM) has a large collection of Pre-Raphaelite art as well and other noteworthy artists. I will splatter a bit of art in between my wandering beginning with a Sir John Everett Millais painted titled <b>The White Cockade.</b><br />
<br />

<br />
I especially like this particular painting because it is a mock depiction of a women in 18th-century dress sewing on a cockade (ribbons) onto a there cornered hat.<br />
<br />
Here is a closer look...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The painting is an oil on panel and you can see what time has done to the panel - look closely at the line running up her right side. It was painted in 1862.<br />

Happy Wanderings...</div>

The other day I received an email from a friend and fellow
labyrinth enthusiast and artist, Linda Gordon (<a href="http://www.lindagordon.org.uk/">http://www.lindagordon.org.uk</a>).
Several years ago we collaborated on a joint Summer Solstice labyrinth walk. We
both hosted labyrinth walks for the Aune Heads Art Centre ‘The Home and The
World 2012’ conference at the same time but in 2 different locations, Linda was
on site in Devon while I facilitated my walk at The Delaware Art Museum in
Wilmington, DE. We shared our experience via Skype – we walked together,
chatted with the participants after the walk and asked/answered questions about
the differences in the 2 labyrinths (Medieval design in Wilmington and
Classical design in Devon). It was a fabulous shared experience on both sides
of The Pond. <o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p><br /></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The subject of her latest email was World Labyrinth Day.
Linda is keen on offering a labyrinth in the public area outside her local
library, Barnstaple Library, and the library is excited about this
opportunity.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>But Linda had several
concerns including the weather (in case of rain) and the creation of a Plan B.
A usual Plan B would be to move the labyrinth indoors but the meeting spaces
have already been reserved, it is a long Bank Holiday in the UK so there may be
a lot of people in the library (especially if the weather is rainy) and the
Children’s Section (where there is some space) is extra busy on Saturday
afternoons.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If the forecast is for heavy rain then Linda is considering
offering the labyrinth on the Friday before (May 1) and give those who attend
printed labyrinth designs to take home and ‘walk’ on Saturday at 1:00 pm. And/or
possibly do a little workshop in the Children’s Section. She then asked me for
my thoughts and suggestions. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Here are a few ideas I came up with...<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="color: #343434; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">You
can use finger labyrinths. I believe finger labyrinths can be very
powerful tools for meditation and connection. You can print them out or even
make a few for people to use (here's one idea <a href="http://heatherplett.com/2015/01/make-finger-labyrinth-also-piece-art/"><span style="color: #0950c4;">http://heatherplett.com/2015/01/make-finger-labyrinth-also-piece-art/</span></a>).
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="color: #343434; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Or
gathering small sticks and stones to create a small labyrinth that they can
walk with their fingers, eyes or if there is room then lay a plastic tarp down,
place sticks, stones etc on the tarp in the design of a small labyrinth (3 or 5
circuit depending on room and size of tarp) and people can walk this
labyrinth. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: #343434; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Another
idea is a virtual finger labyrinth (<a href="http://labyrinthsociety.org/virtual-labyrinth-walk"><span style="color: #0950c4;">http://labyrinthsociety.org/virtual-labyrinth-walk</span></a>).
Set up a laptop or if you can borrow one or two, have several set up and add
headphones or ear buds to lock out the distraction from other library patrons.
Or, of your library has computer stations then maybe you can reserve a few in
case of foul weather.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br />
This was an inexpensive temporary labyrinth that can be used again. I used 18 packages of nylon rope purchased at a discount store for $2.00 per 100 foot package. The rope was colorful and can withstand rain and foul weather.After hand crocheting 2 different colored ropes together as one I secured the rope to the ground using landscaping sod staples that can be easily removed and used again!Carol M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/02889184839801848222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8752551325206427199.post-18209301821911863072013-06-10T11:23:00.000-07:002013-06-10T11:23:01.249-07:00DRIFT Marathon, ImPerfect City & the Finish LineSaturday was the final run for The DRIFT - Three Month Marathon at The DCCA (Delaware Center For The Contemporary Arts). Cleaning out a box the other day I discovered a series of letters written to me by my father, Clarence (Cy) Rollins. My dad passed away in 2010 but the letters live on...</div>

"Dear Carol,<br />
Gosh I miss you!!!<br />
It's Saturday afternoon and I've finished my chores (I never did show you Moms whip did I?). I'm sitting here having an orange juice & Capt Morgan Rum - I call it a phillips head screwdriver.<br />
Bob and Lori stopped in today and brought their new Lab (Black) named Bo. While we were eating lunch he left it tied up in our breezeway. He pooped on the cement and Ed came in and stepped in it and tracked it through the house and to the porch (Ed Tweedy), They also brought Nicole and she loves the Dog. She hugs it and it scratches her then she cries. It was high tide and we took the dog down by the river and she went swimming.<br />
I started working this past Monday, working for Cheer Meals on Wheels. It's OK but I don't like old people especially the ones that are younger than me.<br />
Enclosed is a letter from Captain Scott USMC. I thought you would enjoy reading it. He seems like a fine young man.<br />
Well this phillips head screw driver needs replenishing and I better go and get a new one.<br />
As I write this letter you're leaving Venice. Bon Voyage and Semper Fi.<br />
<br />
I love you.<br />
<br />
Love,<br />
Dad"<br />
<br />

<br /><div>
Well, I saved the letter from Dad but not from Captain Scott! The letter was sent to me when I was joining the Vistafjord ship - a Cunard ship from my days working for the Golden Door Spa At Sea Program. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Times have changed...my beloved brother, Bob and my dad have both passed but Ed, Lori and Nicole are alive and well!<br /><br /></div>

Sarah Green and I decided to create a few works of art using bike parts and yarn to display. The art included a yarn-bombed beach cruiser and many bike parts that were wrapped and woven with a variety of yarn. Enjoy the photos below..<br />

Today's adventure was to create my own knitting needles. I purchased a wooden dowel at a local craft store for less than 1 dollar. I divided it into 4 equal pieces, cut them with a pair of garden shears and then sharpened the ends in a pencil sharpener.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjADIr-177msZ-LQN5LHB-DJbKNPCMlXHdQR_jhwJOxZDTb-8ASLYuTGk5-J6LU_SQ8Ebrg32bR3eUQDwqjs6g5X28E5FnSVOYFl6TOk46KwyLZgQgOrZrxZ1rgbcM89GyFUOrBRNRAZ_o/s1600/DSC02260.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjADIr-177msZ-LQN5LHB-DJbKNPCMlXHdQR_jhwJOxZDTb-8ASLYuTGk5-J6LU_SQ8Ebrg32bR3eUQDwqjs6g5X28E5FnSVOYFl6TOk46KwyLZgQgOrZrxZ1rgbcM89GyFUOrBRNRAZ_o/s320/DSC02260.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Finished acorn capped needles</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Then I played with some polymer clay and a few acorn tops I had left over from my felted acorn project. A rolled a few balls of clay and stuffed them into the acorn cap. Then I pushed the needle into the cap/clay and reworked the clay shape (ever so slightly!).<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">blurry close up of pink & green acorns!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
After pre-heating the oven, I baked them for a little over 15 minutes - caps, clay and dowel.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">a little more natural then the pink/green!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
After they cooled I took a little wax paper and bees wax to smooth the dowel/needles. I also popped off the acorn top and added a little glue...just in case.<br />
<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Recently I yarn-bombed a chair (and felted small creatures because the chair looked lonely!) for an exhibition at the Newark Arts Alliance (NAA). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">covered chair using a variety of techniques.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Then, Governor Jack Markell (DE) came to visit the NAA and sat in my chair. He has a great sense of humor and is definitely a good-sport!<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Gov. Jack Markell & me laughing hysterically!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Then I headed to Wisconsin for the Annual TLS (The Labyrinth Society) Gathering. I had always wanted to create a labyrinth on the grounds so I decided to knit one.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">finished labyrinth</td></tr>

<br />
The labyrinth was knitted in 2 pieces with the total length somewhere around 150 feet.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yesterday I met 2 friends in Swarthmore, PA to show them the labyrinth at The Swarthmore Presbyterian Church on Harvard Avenue. First we spent an hour or two at Pendle Hill (a Quaker Retreat & Study Center) but the rain kept us from walking the classical 7 circuit labyrinth. But we did have the opportunity to walk the grounds (with an umbrella) to see the gardens, art studio, library, barn, bookstore and main house.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Eventually we decided we were hunger so we headed to the "Ville" or downtown Swarthmore to grab lunch. Fortunately the skies decide to take a short break (but alas the humidity did not!) so we went to the Presbyterian Church to see their Memorial Labyrinth and Gardens. The weather cooperated so we walked the Medieval or Chartres pattern.</div>

Walking this labyrinth brings back many memories. One such memory occurred 7 or 8 years ago as I was walking solo in the labyrinth. To the right of the gardens is a children's playground (not pictured) and a young girl (maybe 3 or 4) was playing on the equipment with her father. I could hear part of the conversation and lots of laughter. Then I heard the young girl ask her father "Daddy, why is that old lady walking around in circles?" I have no idea how he responded because I immediately began laughing out loud - I guess I became the crazy old lady walking around in circles!<br />

Today I took a walk through Winterthur. Winterthur is a local garden originally owned by Henry duPont. The estate and gardens are wonderful and include a quarry, a fairy garden, museum, gift shops and many miles of trails. I decided to travel off the beaten path and write a few short poems along the way. </div>

Last week I ventured to Chestertown Maryland to see my daughter at Chesapeake Crew Camp. The rowing camp was part of Washington College's summer camp season and they rowed on the lovely Chester River. Washington College is located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and is the Alma Mater of both of my parents and my Uncle Harold.<br />

Driving through Chestertown and before I reached the College campus I noticed the Bluebird Tavern sign. I grew up with my father's stories of the Bluebird. Theta Chi's drinking and carrying on, hanging at the Tavern instead of studying etc. Oh! how I wished I wrote those stories down before my father passed on.<br />

And yes, the younger siblings do always have to get dragged around. Bevyn's brother and his friend joined us. </div>
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Today I had the pleasure of spending a few hours with my friend and talented harpist, Jupie and her hubby. After watching the last 15 minutes of the Tour de France (ouch..crashes and off the course in the last minute!) we headed out to her backyard where she has created a very powerful and creative labyrinth.</div>
<br class="Apple-interchange-newline" /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Her labyrinth has been lovingly created in a grove of trees using mulch. The path meanders around trees - in and out, out and in until you settle in the center.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfxLp0D6OtYpXkarPPb_AOUTaUAJvmdTn56JO5abks4GMIlDcrtbh6sYAuHkYJvi8y_ESJrfn_yu_6QkiqRbqcDU-Z1LjY3Z_p59LAVUdOFWSWbJiC9JQYhSKLA8S39-ceuWgy5EOUmyI/s1600/DSC02088.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfxLp0D6OtYpXkarPPb_AOUTaUAJvmdTn56JO5abks4GMIlDcrtbh6sYAuHkYJvi8y_ESJrfn_yu_6QkiqRbqcDU-Z1LjY3Z_p59LAVUdOFWSWbJiC9JQYhSKLA8S39-ceuWgy5EOUmyI/s320/DSC02088.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">From this angle it is difficult to see the path but once you begin walking the path reveals itself!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We then went to a neighboring park and they introduced me to a really cute labyrinth created by shrubbery and bricks. The small park in Thornbury Township Pennsylvania is an ode to the circle. The circular labyrinth, a circle of picnic tables, a cement circle with a hopscotch court painted on it and a wishing wheel. There was no signage concerning the labyrinth but it is a tranquil and quiet setting for centering.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Thornbury Township Labyrinth</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
And of course, it can't be all labyrinth's and centering. 2 over-sized Adirondack chairs provide a platform for fun, laughter, climbing and togetherness.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Some people never grow up!!</td></tr>

<br />
Finally, this Cherry tree is located by Jupie's labyrinth has a hollowed out spot. The space was created by woodpeckers (must be a great tasting tree!) and I think it would be a great space to yarn-bomb...more on that later.<br />

<span style="text-align: left;">The birds are chirping, the yarn is bright...why not brighten up the day for a few friends and the birdies! I decided to yarn bomb a few birdhouses and then secretly leave them at the home of 2 dear friends and avid bird lovers.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">finished bird houses!</td></tr>

<br />
This is what I started with...a pre-made birdhouse (I am NOT a carpenter...yet!) and 4 rolls of yarn (purchased for $1.00 each!).<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Before...</td></tr>

<br />
And then they were bombed...front pieces were created with felt. For the house on the left I used green wool and felted it and the house on the right I used felt that I had purchased.<br />

So, I tipped toed to my friend Barbara's door - a yarn bomber does not want to be caught and I was doing this in broad daylight! And left the house by her front door...<br />

In March I had the opportunity to join a group of descendants of slaves, slave owners and slave traders at The Coming to the Table (<a href="http://www.comingtothetable.org/">www.comingtothetable.org</a>) conference. Coming to the Table (CTTT) is an organization that "provides leadership, resources and a supportive environment for all who wish to acknowledge and heal wounds from racism that is rooted in the United States’ history of slavery." The weekend was filled with tears, stories, connections, awareness and friendship (newly formed and reconnections).

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The conference was held in the sacred space of Richmond Hill Virginia. Richmond Hill (RH) is "an ecumenical retreat center based on prayer, healing, hospitality and reconciliation." The retreat center is distinctively Christian, but welcomes people of other faiths who chose to worship there. Richmond Hill houses a full-time residential community that supports the operation of the retreat center. One special feature I enjoyed was the rhythm of prayer at RH - prayer or silence is expected 3 times a day for 15 minutes (7am, 12 noon and 6 pm). I welcomed the ringing of the bells as an opportunity in reflect and spiral inwards towards prayer and contemplation.</div>

The Cupola sits alone on top of the retreat center and overlooks the City of Richmond. With windows on all 4 sides, a table to hold my morning coffee and cushioned chairs to support me, the cupola offered a special space to sit, meditate and write. I wrote the following poetry sketch in the comfort of the cupola.<br />

There once was a displaced rock that waited to be reconnected with her wall....<br />

<br />
Then one day someone came to visit the rock and wrapped it with warm felted wool (it does get chilly in the evenings during springtime), embellished with a crocheted vines and flowers and returned it to its home on the wall...<br />

<br />
Actually, my dear friend Robyn (www.rainbowweaves.blogspot.com) was offering up a "Queen of Hearts" challenge and I wondered how I could incorporate yarn and a Valentine's gift. This is what I came up with...<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_GNnQK8w5rSEw4hGgAikmAZZmuTqT6_pZnpg8E_MYg_UOMsZPPw6ku3i_8bencP7O5xyUdRdQPZMNhrLVu88iBobccPXpLP-2eja24mC4nHaH2uRSBsfQ2qVgbPFqGjX-ea1V9DywrLo/s1600/DSC01885.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_GNnQK8w5rSEw4hGgAikmAZZmuTqT6_pZnpg8E_MYg_UOMsZPPw6ku3i_8bencP7O5xyUdRdQPZMNhrLVu88iBobccPXpLP-2eja24mC4nHaH2uRSBsfQ2qVgbPFqGjX-ea1V9DywrLo/s320/DSC01885.JPG" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A coffee cozy with LOMA Cafe coffee!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
I decided to create a coffee cozy by knitting a rectangle, sewing a crocheted chain into the shape of a heart and then whip stitching it into a tube shape.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh48YSZkDmI4pR_PSiMPqd6YQQNiQqdgPbBKckArD_OaDmeExSVM82rqaIb93SgM3Nq6hfP6U5CsXjLKDP72_vDRYr5Z4yGhuZyjgW39AW29wdBZNrYGweuMuEOJFX_jnCwGOUV6XnF9Kw/s1600/DSC01874.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh48YSZkDmI4pR_PSiMPqd6YQQNiQqdgPbBKckArD_OaDmeExSVM82rqaIb93SgM3Nq6hfP6U5CsXjLKDP72_vDRYr5Z4yGhuZyjgW39AW29wdBZNrYGweuMuEOJFX_jnCwGOUV6XnF9Kw/s320/DSC01874.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">before I sewed up the cozy!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Then I added a cup of delicious LOMA Cafe coffee and gave it away to a man on the street as I wished him a Happy Valentine's Day. It is sometimes nice to give your heart away!<br />
